How to change a water pump on a 4hp evinrude boat motor?

OK, in a nutshell, here it goes.

If it has a shifter (forward - neutral - reverse) you must unhook the shift rod where it attaches to the shift lever on the powerhead. Now that it's unhooked, remove the bolts that hold the gearcase to the lower unit. Give her a pull and the entire gearcase should come off, including the driveshaft and water tube. OK, remove the screws holding the water pump in place and carefully pull the pump off. Do not lose the drive key, if so equipped. Note the direction the vanes on the pump go, and make sure to put the new impeller in the same way. Use a gob of grease and smear it in the cup to protect the impeller until it fills with water (yes, we do this in the factory). Reassemble the pump and slide the gearcase back together.

Note: this is TYPICAL, and your unit may vary somewhat. A manual would be a good investement though.

Good luck. How to change a water pump on a 4hp evinrude boat motor?take the lower unit off be careful not to lose anything it might be alittle tricky but it is easy. How to change a water pump on a 4hp evinrude boat motor?I can tell you this.......you cannot find boat motor maintenance instructions on the Internet for free. They just can't be found.....I have looked. Invest the money and buy yourself a book form a dealer and it will tell you exactly how to do it. It is not hard and anyone with a little mechanical knowledge can do it but get yourself a book. If you are replacing a water pump there will be other things down the road that will need attention and your book will help. Good Luck
