How long should the Second timing belt & water pump last on a '98 Mitsubishi Eclipse?

This car is the GS (non-turbo) model with the larger 2.4 L engine and now has 140,000 miles on it . The owners manual says to change the first one around 60k - I did that one on time. But, then I've heard that the parts that are put in at 60k last alot longer than the originals. How long should they last? And, when do I need to change the timing belt %26amp; water pump again? This should have been done at 120,000 miles. You should go with what the owner's manual says if you want to keep your car for a long time. when timing belts breaks, rods and pistons will be F***** and you will have to dole out lots of dough. spend a little now or a lot later. to avoid being double charged for labor when replacing timing belt you should consider changing water pump too as water pump and timing belt are located in the same area.How long should the Second timing belt %26amp; water pump last on a '98 Mitsubishi Eclipse?I would definately consider replacing the timing belt soon. Japanese cars normaly need the timing changed sooner than other autos. The enginse are made of lighter metals so if the timing breaks it will bend up your rods and dent up your pistons which is really expensive and time consuming to get fixed. It is better and cheaper to be safe and early than the alternative. Not sure about the water pump however.

I would replace the water pump at 120,000 miles if it makes it that long. Don't forget to change the timing belt pulleys and hydraulic tensioner which I prefer to do every belt change to avoid come backs. The 420A motor is well known for the bad head gasket design from the Chrysler factory so make sure to check for oil leaks before doing the work or you will have to repeat the belt work when replacing the head gasket.
