How to change the water pump of a 1988 rx7?

Changing a waterpump on an RX-7 is much easier than a piston engine because its an external pump. On a piston engine you usually have to take the timing belt and crap off to get to it so people say its a big hard job, but on a rotary its very simple.

First, find the water pump by following the two big radiator hoses, the thing that they both connect to is the waterpump. Its on top of the front cover and a bit left-ish.

Start by removing the fan and fan shroud to make space. Then remove the belts on the pulleys. Remove the alternator (on top of the engine) and set it aside.

From here there are two options (your question is a bit vague). If you are just replacing the pump itself with a new one from an autoparts store or something, you can go ahead and unbolt the pump and put on the new one (with a new gasket!). You have to b a bit careful though. unbolt all the bolts on the front of the waterpump, but be careful only to slide pump itself away from the housing. If you pull the waterpump housing away from the engine, you have to change the rear gasket also.

There might be a bolt that holds the housing to the engine without holding the pump to the housing, but i forget, so just be aware.

If you are removing the whole pump and housing (or tore that rear housing gasket), you have to take off the crankshaft pulley, so keep reading.

Remove the four little bolts around the outside and slide the pulley off. Keep in mind this pulley will only go back on one way, so mark it if you want to remember how it goes, otherwise keep turning it 90 degrees until it fits back on. This will make sure your timing marks stay in the right place.

Then you can unbolt the waterpump, and re-bolt in the new one. make sure you get use new gaskets, and while your there it might not be a bad idea to get a new thermostat as well.

I hope theres nothing I forgot, but it's straightforward. Find the waterpump, move the crap in your way, and re-assemble. good luck! How to change the water pump of a 1988 rx7?all you have to do is lift the back hatch life up the carpet and there is like 10 screws holding the fuel pump down you pull that out put the new one in and put screws back in basically thats all i had to do it when i converted my na to a turbo engine
