How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?

my car is leaking anti-freez from what look like to be the head on the back side of the block but i was told that it most likly is the water pump. I just hade the water pump changed last year by a friend. So i dont know how to replace it. It looks like the housing for the water pump is realy big, looks like it covers alot of the motor by the pullys.any help would be coolHow to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?I have a grand am 3.1 v6 and I had the same problem and it is not the waterpump, its a blown intake gasket which is very common on this engine , as a matter of fact it has blown it twice in 142,000 miles, better get it fixed immediately or you will be replacing the engine shortly, check your oil for water as thats where it will go.The cost of the repair is around $600.How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?The water pump on my 3.1 is located on the front right corner of the block (standing at the passenger side). If you have coolant leaking from the back side of the motor it is not the water pump. Are you sure that it's coming from the block and not from a heater hose? Your heater hose's go in through the lower-middle of fire wall behind the motor(be sure to check the metal lines as well). How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?If it is leaking from the back side of the block then it is more than likely not the water pump. The water pump only leaks from its mating surface to the engine block, or most commonly, through a drip hole located directly under the water pump drive shaft. A leak on the back side could be a blown head gasket. You should verify where the exact leak is before you start replacing a bunch of stuff. How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?There is a weep hole on the bottom of all water pumps, this lets you know that the bearing in the water pump is worn out by dripping a small amount of coolant. Most auto parts stores will rent or let you use a cooling system pressure tester, which will pressurize your cooling system and let you look around the engine without it running or being to hot to get close to. There are plenty of manuals that will walk you through changing the pump, its really not too hard.
